Cultivating Connections June 2018

It’s June!

Verbena Marketing is pleased to bring you the June edition of Cultivating Connections, your monthly resource for networking opportunities, business tips, and professional development tools.

Sunny summer days are upon us! This means less time behind a computer and more time at the beach. Less time in the office and more time at home with family. More time away from civilization and more time connecting with nature. More time slowing down and less time rushing. It’s the perfect time to reflect on what’s important! For us, it’s spending more time with family so we will see you back in the Fall.

If you have an event, resource or tool you would like to share for possible inclusion in our next issue, please send it to hello@verbenamarketing.com

If you need help setting, meeting or exceeding your marketing and business development goals, we can help your business blossom!

Drop the Ball

Instead of another book about trying to do it all, this month’s pick is all trying not doing it all. Quite a paradigm shift for anyone trying to be the best in business while trying to be a pinterest mom.

After she had her first child, author Tiffany Dufu struggled to accomplish everything she thought she needed to in order to succeed. Like so many driven and talented women who have been brought up to believe that to have it all, they must do it all, Dufu began to feel that achieving her career and personal goals was an impossibility. Eventually, she discovered the solution: letting go.

This is an inspiring read full of practical take-aways about how to manage the conflicting demands of work, parenthood, and marriage — by letting some of it go.

A New Place to Work. Shop. Learn.

The Heart

Opening June 15, a new creative collaborative work space, pop up shop and location of the The Local Space will be opening in Downtown Cloverdale. If you’re looking for a new place to hang your shingle or just want to support all things local check it out!

We all have heard the old saying that in life, it’s not only about what you know, but who you know. And sometimes opportunities just come down to being in the right place at the right time.Because networking is about building mutually beneficial relationships, don’t forget the relationships you already have at your children’s schools, mom’s groups, book clubs, etc. You just never know who might need your services!

Cultivating Connections May 2018

It’s May!

Verbena Marketing is pleased to bring you the May edition of Cultivating Connections, your monthly resource for networking opportunities, business tips, and professional development tools.

With the flowers blossoming, May is a time to reflect upon our personal and professional goals and evaluate whether or not they are growing in direction we want them to. If they aren’t, have you asked yourself if you’ve planted the right seeds, provided the right fertilizer to make them grow, and tended to you garden enough to make it flourish?

If you have an event, resource or tool you would like to share for possible inclusion in our next issue, please send it to hello@verbenamarketing.com

If you need help setting, meeting or exceeding your marketing and business development goals, we can help your business blossom!

Facetune

We all know Istagram remains one of the most important players in the social media game. So are you trying to up your own engagement and wonder how “everyone else” manages to make all their photos look so good?

The answer may not be professional photographs, but a nifty little app called Facetune. For a nominal fee, you can turn your mobile phone into a photo editing machine by allowing to retouch facial features, adjust lighting, change sizing, etc.

It won’t replace Photoshop know-how and hours of time, but it will give you the ability to edit photos on the go.

Social media influencer Megan Parker also recommends Smart Seed, Afterlight and Touch Retouch.

– Marie Forleo

In Your Toolbox
You need to network before you need your network. Start by enhancing your relationships with your contacts.

Show support, offer assistance, reach out, check in, go above and beyond: GIVE SOMETHING. Set up a schedule to make this  a priority. And at the end of every connection, ask what you can do to help make a difference in something that matters to them.

Connect in-person or by phone, because no matter what, digital will never replace face-to-face.

The Upside of Stress
Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It

In this riveting read, Stanford Psychologist and TED speaker Kelly McGonigal takes a different approach about the subject of stress. Instead of telling us the reasons why to avoid it, she shares how we can take advantage of it and use it to propel ourselves forward in our lives and our businesses by embracing it.

The Upside of Stress  brings together cutting-edge discoveries on the correlation between resilience—the human capacity for stress-related growth and mind-set – the power of beliefs to shape reality.
It’s not a guide to getting rid of stress, but a guide to getting better at stress, by understanding it, embracing it, and using it.

Networking is like finding the right pair of shoes. Just like there are red-soled stilettos for evening out or a pair of cork-bottomed sandals for a day at the beach, networking opportunities come in all shapes and sizes.

If you haven’t found your networking fit, make sure to try attending a variety of networking events to find what works best for you: large scale or intimate, industry specific, morning or night, community focussed, female only … the choices are endless. And don’t be afraid to be the newcomer. Most groups will welcome you with open arms once you share this. Remember, 99% of success is the result of just showing up.

Cultivating Connections March 2018

It’s March!

Verbena Marketing is pleased to bring you the March edition of Cultivating Connections, your monthly resource for networking opportunities, business, and professional development tools.

Are you a lamb or a lion? I recently had the privilege of seeing Michelle Obama in person. Although I’ve heard her speak countless times in the media, it was different to hear her words live. She is as formidable on stage as on TV, and no matter your political beliefs, she has great things to say about believing in the power of ourselves. As female business owners, we are our own worst critics and our own worst enemies. We question ourselves and our businesses. We need to change this and become our biggest advocates and the biggest believers in ourselves and our dreams. In Michelle Obama’s words: “Confidence is a muscle you need to exercise.”

If you have an event, resource or tool you would like to share for possible inclusion in our next issue, please send it to hello@verbenamarketing.com

If you need help setting, meeting or exceeding your marketing and business development goals, we can help your business blossom!

You are a Badass

By Jen Sincero

If you’re looking for an entertaining and easy-to-digest motivational business book, Jen Sincero’s You are a Badass should be added to your bookshelf.

With inspiring stories, sage advice, easy exercises, (don’t mind the occasional swear word), this book will help you identify and change the self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviours that stop you from getting what you want and blast past your fears so you can take bigger risks.

By the end of this read, you’ll understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can’t change, how to change what you don’t love, and how kick some serious ass.

Trello

Does your project management consist of post-it-notes and notes jotted down on napkins? Do you need to visualize how you keep track of your tasks and projects? Then Trello might be the right tool for you.

Trello is a online app that organizes your projects into boards. All your projects, all your tasks, all of your team are organized, accounted for, and easily visible at a glance. Just like notes on a whiteboard, but paperless and sharable to collaborate with others. There’s a free version to try and more advanced pay-for options.

“Believe in the power of your own story.”

Need confidence to attend a networking event? It’s always more awkward when you’re attending an event for yourself, so make it about others and you have nothing to be afraid of!

Networking doesn’t happen overnight. Patience is key. In any relationship trust is earned and rapport takes time to be established. Don’t expect to attend a networking function and gain business from it the next day. It takes an average of six months to year to build a solid relationship. So be a regular attendee, be a listener, and be ready to offer assistance however you can.
