On Your Reading List
Recommended to me by a very successful local boss babe, James Clear’s Atomic Habits is an easy read filled with practical advice and strategies for mastering habit formation.
The book breaks down the science of habits as mental shortcutsthrough the use of relatable stories and analogies, and it places huge emphasis on setting up systems rather than focusing solely on goals. There does seem to be a lot of literature out there around goal setting but Clear argues that goals should be seen as momentary events and it’s what comes before the goal that truly matters. The book urges the reader to recognize goals for what they are – the outcome – and to remember that without well-practiced systems in place we have a tendency to revert to old habits following the achievement of goal.
Core to his philosophy is the 4 stage approach to habit formation and the mathematical compounding principal of aiming to get 1% better every day. As an added bonus, Clear provides downloadable worksheets at the end of each chapter to help you get started implementing change.
One thing I really liked about the approach is that it really focuses on the power of small changes. I can speak from my own experience in saying that setting goals that are too lofty and don’t provide a clear path to reward very seldom get achieved. Atomic Habits is broken down into simple and easily digestible steps to help the reader recognize what their habits are and what they want them to be while providing a roadmap on how to get there. The main take away for me is that “habits are like atoms” – whether good or bad they have a tendency to multiply, and that deliberate daily routines (however small they may feel) can add up to massive positive change.

Verbena Marketing’s June Tip for a Better Brand
You hear the term “branding” all the time and all over the place. But do you know what it really means?
According to our old friend Wiki:
“A brand is an overall experience of a customer that distinguishes an organization or product from its rivals in the eyes of the customer. Brands are used in business, marketing, and advertising. Name brands are sometimes distinguished from generic or store brands.”
So what does this mean in real life? If you’re just starting out, this means a consistent look and feel for all that you do in-person and everywhere else.
Don’t get caught up in overthinking this. Start by using a consistent font and colour library for all that you. Carry this over to a consistent look and feel for all of your instagram posts … maybe using a photo app so all your photos look the same.
